HISTORY OF THE ORIGINAL 6
The Original 6 NHL teams – the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs – have a long and rich history that transcends generations of fans.
Today these teams are known for their iconic hats that are officially licensed and readily available from Hat Pro Shop. From the classic throwback designs to the modernized logos on crisp dad hats with buckle straps or snapback trucker hats, you can find your favorite team's officially licensed hat at Hat Pro Shop. Each officially licensed hat is officially licensed by the NHL and features high quality materials that are sure to stand up to years of wear and tear.
The Original 6 was formed in 1942 when the NHL officially reduced its number of franchises from 10 teams to six. This move was made in order to save money during World War II, although each of these teams had been around since at least 1924-25 season — making them some of the oldest professional hockey teams in North America.
The Bruins were established in 1924 as part of the Great Expansion, when the league expanded from five teams to ten. They began play in 1925 wearing brown and yellow jerseys with a bear logo on their sweaters. The original style hats for this team featured a similar design – a yellow bill with a brown body featuring the bear logo patch on either side. As time went on, this patch was replaced with several iterations of different logos including the “B” logo still used today on officially licensed Bruins hats from Hat Pro Shop.
The Blackhawks also came about during this expansion effort as one of three original franchises based out of Chicago — playing as home games at Chicago Coliseum before eventually settling into United Center in 1994. Their famous red-and-black color scheme dates back almost 100 years ago when they first took to ice in 1926 sporting red sweaters with black stripes on either arm and their now iconic “C” logo on top — which can be found today embroidered onto officially licensed Blackhawks headwear at Hat Pro Shop.
The Detroit Red Wings were founded in 1926 as part of another expansion effort which saw four American cities added to the NHL lineup — though they were established two years prior as a franchise belonging to Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL). Originally known as “the Cougars” due to their use of cougar fur pelts draped around players’ necks during warmups — this name switched over time until they settled officially onto “Red Wings” beginning in 1932 before moving into Joe Louis Arena in 1979 where they currently play today . Officially Licensed Red Wings hats feature an array of different colors & styles for fans everywhere such as snapback trucker hats with their classic winged wheel crest or dad hats with buckles straps displaying their stylish new “D” logo — all available at Hat Pro Shop!
The Toronto Maple Leafs officially joined the Original Six hockey teams in 1926, officially becoming a part of one of the most iconic and historic professional sports leagues in the world. Since then, they have become one of the most successful franchises in NHL history.
The team began its journey to becoming an Original Six member when it was founded as the Toronto Arenas by Eddie Livingstone in 1917. After competing for several years as part of the National Hockey Association (NHA), the team officially joined the newly-formed NHL for its inaugural season in 1917-18. The original nickname was officially changed to "Maple Leafs" after Conn Smythe bought out Livingstone's franchise rights in 1927.
The Montreal Canadiens are one of the six founding teams that joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1917. This storied franchise has gone on to have the most success in NHL history, becoming the first team to win 24 Stanley Cups, and having a total of 27 championships to their name.
The Canadiens have been home to some of the best players of all time, from Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard, Jean Beliveau and Guy Lafleur, to more modern stars like Carey Price and P.K Subban. They were also one of the inaugural members of what is now known as “The Original Six” – the only six teams that made up NHL from 1942 through 1967.
