Colorado Avalanche is an American professional ice hockey team based in Denver and part of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). Founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques, they relocated to Denver in 1995 and joined the NHL as an expansion team.

The Avalanche have been one of the most successful teams in NHL history; they won their first Stanley Cup championship in 1996, only their first season in Colorado, and added a second title in 2001. Other accomplishments include nine division titles, eight conference titles, two Presidents' Trophies for having the league's best regular-season record, seven 40-win seasons, four 50-win seasons and three 100-point seasons. As of 2021, they are tied with the New Jersey Devils for sixth all-time most points achieved per season since entering the NHL.

Under head coach Bob Hartley, Colorado became known as one of the most successful franchises throughout its existence. Between 1995 and 2003—a span that includes both championships—the Avalanche won six division titles and made it to at least the Conference Finals seven times (1995–1996; 1997–1998; 1999–2000; 2000–2001; 2001–2002; 2002–2003). Patrick Roy also became a fan favorite during his tenure with Colorado from 1995 to 2003 when he amassed 151 wins as goaltender for The Avs.

Since 2003–2004, however, The Avalanche have struggled to find success on and off the ice due to poor management decisions by ownership, leading to a period that some fans refer to as “The Dark Age” or “The Lost Decade”. This period was marked by several years when Colorado failed to qualify for post-season play despite having talented rosters featuring players such as Milan Hejduk, Paul Stastny and Joe Sakic.

In recent years however there has been renewed hope amongst fans following changes made within ownership roles and coaching staffs that saw Jared Bednar take over at head coach alongside Joe Sakic assuming control GM duties.

With improved drafting methods put into place by Sakic including major transactions like acquiring Gabriel Landeskog from Columbus Blue Jackets and Nathan MacKinnon via draft pick in 2013 saw The Avs make a dramatic return towards competitive hockey making back-to-back post season appearances between 2018 & 2019 before winning their ninth division title during 2020 - 2021 regular season campaign behind high powered offense led by MacKinnon who set franchise records for points scored over 56 game regular season schedule.
