HISTORY OF THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

As Canada's oldest franchise, the Toronto Maple Leafs have a rich history that has spanned over a century. Established in 1917 as part of the National Hockey Association (NHA), they were originally known as the Toronto Arenas before they changed their name to the Maple Leafs in 1927. The team rose to prominence during the 1940s and 50s when they won five Stanley Cups in just seven seasons between 1942-1967.

During this time, they developed rivalries with other Canadian teams such as the Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks, which remain strong to this day. More recently, the Maple Leafs have had success in recent years – making the playoffs for three consecutive seasons from 2017-2020 and competing in two Eastern Conference Finals since 2016.
