HISTORY OF THE HARTFORD WHALERS

The Hat Pro Shop is the perfect place to find an officially licensed hat from the NHL's Hartford Whalers – a team that has been beloved by fans since its inception in 1972.

Originally known as the New England Whalers, the franchise began play in the World Hockey Association (WHA), and was one of four original teams for their inaugural season. The Whalers achieved great success during their time in the WHA, making it to the Avco Cup finals three times and winning it once in 1973-1974 while under the leadership of head coach Jack Kelley.

In 1979, the Whalers joined the NHL as part of a four-team merger with the NHL, but struggled compared to their successful WHA days. Despite this, they did manage to make two trips to Stanley Cup playoffs during their 17-year stay in Hartford, Connecticut.

After 17 years in New England, owner Peter Karmanos decided to move the team and they relocated to Carolina where they became known as The Carolina Hurricanes. Although no longer around today, Hat Pro Shop still carries an extensive selection of officially licensed Hartford Whalers hats so fans can show off their pride for this now defunct hockey club.
