The Calgary Flames have been thrilling fans since the team's inception in 1972. Founded as one of the two new franchises joining the NHL in that year, the Flames have a long and storied history of great players, special moments and exciting playoff runs.

The Flames won their first division title in their inaugural season of 1972–73 and went on to make their first Stanley Cup finals appearance in 1986. That was a magical season for Calgary as they stunned hockey fans everywhere with their speed and skill en route to the finals where they lost to Montreal Canadiens in five games.

Since then, the Flames have experienced other successful runs including several division titles and conference championships but they have yet to win another Stanley Cup. Some of the greatest players to ever wear a Calgary jersey include Joe Nieuwendyk, Jarome Iginla, Miikka Kiprusoff and Al MacInnis. The team has had some superstars coaching behind the bench too with names like Darryl Sutter, Terry Crisp and Bob Johnson all leading them during different eras.

Calgary has also provided us with some incredible moments over its years as an NHL franchise. They incredibly came back from 3-2 down against San Jose Sharks outscoring them 9-1 in games 6 & 7 during 2017 Western Conference Finals only to be beaten by Anaheim Ducks 4-3 in game 7 of Stanley Cup Final series. Other memorable occasions include Joe Nieuwendyk winning Conn Smythe trophy while leading Flames to Stanley Cup win in 1989 or Hakan Loob’s “hat trick” goal which officially clinched their second consecutive division title during 1988–89 season.
